“One of our staff members, Leslie Newman, really got us working as a team to organize and manage our fundraising efforts. We held a donation draw and asked local businesses to make a donation (staff and their families also made contributions!) In addition we did an eyeball baking event by donation on World Sight Day and staff supported the fundraising by paying a fine to wear jeans and their OGS t-shirt on Fridays. We managed to raise $1255.79, which exceeded our goal and is up 65% over last year’s collection! It was all proudly raised by the staff!

During October, we had our wall of paper ‘glasses’ which patients could purchase for a $2.00 donation, and every Friday the staff would donate to participate in dress down day. Our main World Sight Day Challenge day was November 6. On that day our doctors donated all full eye exam fees to Optometry Giving Sight. James Wood Opticians in Gateshead held a raffle for World Sight Day and sourced some excellent prizes from generous local businesses. These included a haircut and blow dry at Tony & Guy, a pair of designer sunglasses, and a meal for two at a local restaurant. The raffle was drawn by paralympic gold medallist and young sports personality of the year, Josef Craig MBE. The practice hosted a coffee morning and sold homemade cupcakes on the day of the draw, and praised their local community for their enthusiasm and support, which helped them raise a total of £650.

Leading fundraisers Santro + Peche Opticians reached new heights in their fundraising for this year’s World Sight Day Challenge, by organizing and taking part in a charity skydive. The practice team rallied together a group of eight willing volunteers, consisting of friends, clients, colleagues and Shaf Mohamed – Director at Santro + Peche. The sponsored dive has so far raised £4,310 for Optometry Giving Sight, Shaf explained: “For us, 2013 had to be bigger, better and raise even more than before.” Well done team Santro + Peche!

Family-run optical chain Scrivens Opticians took part in the World Sight Day Challenge across their 146 practices, making them the largest group so far to participate in the annual fundraising initiative. The practice chain, founded in 1938 by qualified optician and pharmacist, Solomon Scriven, is this year celebrating its 75th anniversary and marked the occasion by donating 75p from every sight test in October to Optometry Giving Sight. Scrivens branches got into the party spirit with various fundraising activities from cakes sales to a sponsored in-store bike ride to practice staff dressing as hippies. A total of £3,200.33 was raised.

The Taree practice also won the Eyecare Plus practice decoration competition.

Boneham Eyecare Plus located in Sydney’s CBD raised $387 for The World Sight Day Challenge, 2013. They raised funds through donating their eye exam fees, a Jelly Bean guessing competition, selling ‘bricks’ of our Vision Centre ‘Say Yes’ poster and giving wristbands in exchange for a donation. Dr Gavin Boneham and his team needed no convincing after the joy of last year’s event. The team had a wonderful time decorating the practice and getting into the giving spirit. Boneham Optometrist’s regular patient, Rani (pictured) was very excited to take home the jar of jelly beans after guessing the amount in the jar.

Once again, Fitzroy North Eye Centre has raised much needed funds for Optometry Giving Sight with their month-long participation in the World Sight Day Challenge in October, 2013. Practice Manager, Maria Filleri (pictured -bottom left), and her team shone in their World Sight Day Challenge Tshirts as they campaigned for a clearer future for all. “It was good fun. We had a lolly guessing competition which was a good talking point with the patients and it gave us a chance to talk about World Sight Day.” The team also donated eye exams, their own funds and sold WSDC wristbands. Already looking forward to next year it is clear that the team is very passionate about the cause, they even convinced a local café to get in on the act next year!

“Each year we try to add one more way of raising money for the cause. This year, my committee member added a bake sale, which turned out to be a huge success on World Sight Day. At Family Eyecare Centre we are passionate about eye health and ensuring everyone we come in contact with understands the importance of regular and routine eye exams. For many people in developing countries, they simply do not have the access to resources like we do in Canada. Charities like Optometry Giving Sight help us expand our reach to areas of the world that we would have little ability to help out in. This year we focused our fundraising efforts by having a bake goods and fruit sale. We visited businesses in our community to let them know about the charity we support, why it’s important to us, and how they can help. The response was overwhelming and donations poured in like crazy!

For the World Sight Day Challenge 2013, we at FYI Doctors in Prince Albert decided to hold a fundraising supper. We arranged with Movado’s restaurant a great price on a buffet style menu. The restaurant could seat 80 people, and thanks to our staff’s efforts, we filled all the spots. We also held a sunglass and 50/50 draw, which was a huge success. We had information sheets on each table explaining all about Optometry Giving Sight and how the funds are used, and to create awareness. We had an evening full of great company and many laughs, all for a great cause!

Old South Optometry had a great time raising money for Optometry Giving Sight both during World Sight Day and throughout the entire month. Dr. Marcella Baumann and Dr. Christina Schropp both donated a portion from each eye exam done on World Sight Day. The staff had wonderful time promoting two contests: a raffle draw for some Tommy Hilfiger Sunglasses and a jelly bean guessing contest – there were over 2300 of them! Altogether they were able to raise $346 and bring awareness to this wonderful cause.

Westmorland Eye Clinic was very excited to be able to participate in the World Sight Day fundraiser. Our office held a different event each week throughout the month of October to raise funds for this great cause, from having a yard sale, barbeque and bake sale with help from family and friends to a silent auction and square draw. We also had a table set up in our office all month with books and small household items for sale. This was a great way to bring the office closer together and do our small part to help a larger cause. We would like to thank social media such as Facebook and Kijiji for helping us spread the word. Our office is looking forward to finding creative ways to fundraise in 2014.
