Organizations within the USA eyecare industry have announced the formation of the World Sight Day Challenge Coalition. Coalition members include ABB OPTICAL GROUP, Alcon, AllAboutVision.com™, CooperVision, Essilor, Eyefinity®, Marchon Eyewear, TLC Laser Eye Centers, Transitions Optical, VISTAKON® Division of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc., Vision Source®, VSP Optics, and VSP® Vision Care. The Coalition’s objective is to raise awareness about the importance of eye health and help expand access to eyecare through support of Optometry Giving Sight, and their annual fundraising campaign, the World Sight Day Challenge.
More than 600 million people around the world suffer from avoidable blindness or impaired vision simply because they do not have access to an eye exam and glasses. This directly impacts their daily activities and their ability to learn and work. In addition to helping identify and correct visual acuity needs, an annual eye exam can also detect serious health conditions, such as diabetes, up to seven years before symptoms show.
“Each of the organizations involved in this coalition have a long standing commitment to eye health awareness and access to care,” said Rob Lynch, CEO, VSP Global® and Global Development Board Member for Optometry Giving Sight. “Leveraging the strength of each of the coalition partners allows us to broaden our collective reach in support of Optometry Giving Sight and their global efforts to fund sustainable eyecare-related projects for those in need around the world.”
In an effort to raise awareness and mobilize support behind this public health issue, the World Sight Day Challenge Coalition will take part in a series of activities leading up to World Sight Day, which will take place on October 10.
