Vision Care for the Homeless

Vision Care for the Homeless

CrystalImagine if you were homeless and could not see? Crystal was one such person who was homeless in London and could not afford a pair of glasses that she needed. Thankfully there is an organisation to help her that Optometry Giving Sight is proud to support.

“Vision Care for Homeless People” is a charity providing eye care services to homeless and other vulnerable people in an accessible and friendly environment in which they feel safe, welcome and comfortable.

The majority of homeless and vulnerable people are not in receipt of financial benefits, so then are not eligible for an NHS (National Health System) eye examination and voucher towards their spectacles. “Vision Care for Homeless People” provides a fully comprehensive high quality service totally free of charge even to the remaining majority of homeless people who do not receive benefits.

Vision HallThe charity attracts passionate and loyal optometrists and dispensers who volunteer regularly to assist the homeless with eye care.

“I have volunteered since the summer of 2007 and have enjoyed using my skills to benefit those in need and being able to give spectacles free of charge.  I now try to volunteer once every month,” says Nahida Haque, 26, Volunteer Dispenser.

"As a society we have to do whatever we can to help. I'm a great believer in putting back whenever I can at every opportunity," says Shelly Bansal, BCLA President.       Find out why here.
