Ollie in the land of Oz

Ollie the Optometrist has been very busy dancing and teaching in India. Ollie has one goal, to spread awareness about good eye health and the growing need for spectacles among children.

Ollie the Optometrist was developed as part of a national optometry awareness campaign by the India Vision Institute (an initiative of the LV Prasad Eye Institute and the Brien Holden Vision Institute) and the Wizard of Oz Show to communicate simple eye care messages to children. The campaign is partly supported by Optometry Giving Sight.

Commenting, Professor Brien Holden said: “What a wonderful way to teach the youth of today. Instilling the importance of eye health from an early age is critical and lays a solid foundation for reducing avoidable blindness and vision impairment.”

In the show, Ollie makes a surprise visit to the land of Oz. He helps Dorothy and the gang with some very ocular challenges.

The show is usually preceded by a children’s drama workshop with a focus on eye care as well being a fun introduction to theatre and performance. Children in the workshop get to perform on stage with the Oz cast.

Producer Brian Laul noted that The Wizard of Oz Show had been performed more than 3800 times around the world but this would be the first time the Oz Gang had been joined down this yellow brick road by their good friend Ollie the Optometrist. “Ollie the Optometrist will help bring home the important messages of eye care and hygiene in a fun and memorable way,” he said.

Vinod Daniel, CEO of the India Vision Institute (www.indiavisioninstitute.org) said the Awareness Campaign that has been currently launched in India will greatly assist in recognising Optometry as a profession as well as encouraging high school students to pursue optometry as a rewarding career. He added that India needs one hundred and twenty thousand trained Optometrists while it currently has only forty thousand.
