"A wonderful learning experience."
The EyeTeach© workshops sponsored by Optometry Giving Sight took place in Bogota, Colombia in September 2014. Nydia, a professor of Optometry from the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua (UNAN), participated in the Brien Holden Vision Institute workshop, aimed in strengthening and further developing the profession and of existing eye health practitioners and educators.
“My main responsibility as a professor, is to effectively communicate the teaching material in a clear and concise manner for my students,” she said. “The range of topics covered in EyeTeach© such as Low Vision for example, are a significant resource and now, my students will be able to apply what I have learned in their own practicing career.”
Nydia said the workshop has provided her with the necessary tools in which to make her classes a more dynamic learning ground, getting the students involved in active demonstrations and lively discussion.
“In so many ways, EyeTeach© has been a wonderful learning experience both personally and professionally,” she stated. “As an educator, I feel like I have gained a lot from working alongside other professionals, which in turn has motivated and reinforced my own professional goals. Programs such as, EyeTeach© are vital for the development of Optometry in Latin America.”
Optometry Giving Sight has provided financial support to the Optometry Program at UNAN through our partners VOSH International and the Brien Holden Vision Institute. This has included funds for the purchase of equipment for a teaching laboratory and currently, support for curriculum and Faculty Development.
